Over 170 of our specialist support workers have received self-care gifts this week, in recognition of the incredible care they have shown for people with learning disabilities throughout the pandemic.
The specialist support workers are all part of Somerset Care’s Realise service, which provides tailored, round-the-clock care and support to empower people with learning disabilities to live full and independent lives.
The self-care kits are part of Somerset Care’s wider wellbeing support package for all who provide this valuable service.
They include everything from hand cream to sooth skin that is frequently in contact with alcohol hand gel, to keyring torches for lighting up the shorter days, and treats and snacks to help the specialist support workers make the most of their time off.
Recognising all who care
Andrea Bacon, Head of Specialist Services for Somerset Care, explains:
“Throughout the pandemic, much attention has been quite rightly given to the plight of those working in care homes. Whilst there is no question that residential carers have done an incredible, admirable job under very difficult circumstances, we shouldn’t forget those who continued to deliver exceptional care in people’s homes throughout the Covid-19 crisis.
“Our team of Realise specialist support workers care for people with complex and sometimes challenging learning disabilities, making it all the harder to explain the restrictions placed on all of our lives during the pandemic. The team continue to put the health and wellbeing of those they support above their own self-care, and it is time to show them how valued and appreciated they are.
“The self-care kits are a gesture of our thanks and appreciation, and we hope they will support our incredible Realise team to take care of themselves as well as they take care of their clients. Our thanks to our supplier Blueleaf Care, for donating shower gel, hand cream, lip balm and wash bags for the self-care kits.”
Blueleaf Care’s Tom Curran adds;
“For many years, and especially through 2020, Blueleaf have been privileged to support Somerset Care’s home and care teams with regular deliveries of care and housekeeping essentials. We recognise the enormous pressure they have operated under and admire the way they have continued to put the needs of those they support ahead of their own. We’re so glad to have the opportunity to show our appreciation by supporting this lovely wellbeing initiative.”
