Let's talk about getting older
Getting older. It's something that's happening to all of us, every single day, and yet it's not something that most of us like to talk about.
We think it's time to have the conversation, to discuss what getting older means (and what it doesn't), and discover why age is something to be celebrated, not feared. That's why Somerset Care has teamed up with Age UK Somerset to sponsor a talk by renowned author and Taunton-based consultant geriatrician, Dr Lucy Pollock.
Talking about the taboo
Author of 'The Book About Getting Older (for those who don't want to talk about it)', and newly-appointed Patron of Age UK Somerset, Dr Lucy Pollock will be sharing her learnings, experience and warm-hearted anecdotes about aging at St James' Church, Taunton, at 7:30pm on Friday 1st October 2021, appropriately the date of International Older Persons Day.
Lucy acknowledges that challenges and joys come with living to a great age, and her book touches on both with a brilliant mix of empathy and practicality. Using kind, funny, happy and sad stories it explains what Lucy has learned from colleagues, carers, families and her inimitable patients over the years.
Making the most of it
Nicola Kelly, Somerset Care's Director of Care, reflects on the need to talk about aging in our local communities:
"As an organisation dedicated to supporting people to live the life they choose, Somerset Care is proud to be sponsoring Dr Lucy Pollock's talk about getting older.
"All too often, getting older can be associated only with challenges and difficulties, but we shouldn't forget the great opportunities and joys that can also be found in later life. Being able to have frank and honest conversations around aging is so important - it can help to allay fears, address concerns and establish what is really important to us all as individuals.
"We are all getting older - it's time to make the most of it."
